Welcome Back to the Arduino learn by doing projects  Tutorial series. Our task for today is IR Module the obstacle detecting module with arduino. I found this module very helpful in many projects. I extremely Recommend this if you are making Line following Robot.It has quite good response and easy to interface. Instead of making circuits with IR led's  use this module and easily interface with arduino. I have made a very clean Robot you can see in this post<br />

The IR module is more useful because we can also use this module to measure distance. More importantly it can be used as an encoder, flame sensor , line black and white color detection.<br />
The working phenomenon of IR module is same as the other obstacle avoiding sensors of sending and receiving signals.<br />

The Infrared ( IR )  Sensor has infrared Transmitter and Receiver.It can be used in many ways.There are many applications of IR module. It has quite good response as it gives 0 to 5v the range of 0 to 1024 so we can adjust our threshold in between this range.</div>
<div>
The great and cool thing about this IR module is that it has built in comparator and a potentiometer for adjusting distance range.We can easily adjust our threshold range by varying potentiometer.</div>
<div>
An indication Led is also placed over this module for obstacle indication.</div>

The working principle of IR module is same as in other modules the one transmitter and receiver. The Transmitter sends the infrared signal and receiver catches the bounce back signal.whenever an object come near to the sensor the signals reflected back to the receiver. The signal will not reflect on black surface so it gives 0 instead of 1 this is very helpful in the case of line following robot.</div>

The interfacing of IR module is quite easy.It has one output pin connect this pin to any arduino digital pin.</div>

If i'm not wrong we can say the communication way of fishes.</div><div><br /></div><h2><span style="color: #cc0000;">2-How Ultrasonic SR04 SONAR sensor works</span></h2><div>The Ultrasonic sensor works on the phenomenon of sending sound waves at a particular frequency and receive on bouncing back. The SR04 ultrasonic module is a high accuracy range detector module.The Distance range of SR04 SONAR is from <b>2 cm to 400 cm</b> . </div><div>The module works fine in almost all good conditions but remember in high noise and in some situations and materials the module will not work. The sensor also not works in dead band. How to design a Robot chassis with omni wheels

<h2 style="text-align: center;">Design a Robot Chassis</h2><div>In this article we will see how to design a robot chassis.Robot design depends on the required specification.If we are designing the chassis of Line following Robot our dimensions should not be much larger.so we have some requirements about the size and dimensions.mostly the small and smart sizes are preferred for making obstacle avoiding or line following robot.But if we are making something big..like a Rescue robot the design will be much different either in look and in size as well.</div><div>Here we are making the design for Soccer playing Robot or you can say Pick and place robot.The robot can move  6-DOF.The omni directional robot have the ability to move almost in all directions.</div><div>So here we will see the design of an omni directional robot.</div><div>The are two main types of material used for Robot kits.<br /><ol><li>Acrylic sheets</li><li>Aluminium sheets</li></ol></div><div><h3>Acrylic Sheet (base)</h3><div><div>We can use other but these are the preferred materials.Acrylics sheets are nearly less costly as compared to aluminium sheets.</div><div>We have to design the base of robot from acrylic sheet which is cut by using laser cutting</div><div>machine. The shape of base is circle having the diameter of 250mm and the upper portion is</div><div>about 230mm.The upper two wheels are at the angle of 35dergree from centre and the lower two wheels are at the angle of 45 degree. This design gives the drag to the robot when moving forward and also a movement in the respective angle. The thickness of acrylic sheet is about 5mm we choose acrylic because it is light weight and its cutting is less expensive then the metal.</div></div></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; When it is connected and relay is energized listen the voice  of click.  <b> </b></span></span><br /><br /><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><b><span class="_Tgc _y9e">Normally closed terminal (NC) when coil is energized </span></b></span> </span></span><br /><br /><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"> when  relay is energized. When connect the probes of multimeter with NC and  COM. You find opposite condition of de-energized. Here you got infinite  resistance or resistance in </span></span><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e">MΩ. In energized case if resistance is in </span></span></span></span><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e">MΩ then your NC (normally closed ) terminal of relay is working fine.</span></span></span></span><br /><i><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><br /></span></span></span></span></i> <span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><b><span class="_Tgc _y9e">Normally open terminal (NO) </span></b></span></span></span><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><b><span class="_Tgc _y9e">when coil is de-energized </span></b></span><br /><br /><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><b><span class="_Tgc _y9e"> </span></b></span><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e">when  relay is energized. This is for measuring current.</span></span><br /><br /><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e">First   of all we should find the coil in relay. Mostly it is at pin 2 and 5  as  labelled . If not then you have to check resistance at every pin.</span></span><br /><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><br /></span></span> <span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e">Between these two pins you got resistance between 100</span></span><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e">Ω</span></span></span></span> to  10 K</span></span><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e">Ω. Here i found 4200 ohms resistance.</span></span></span></span><br /><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><br /></span></span></span></span> <span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e">Now calculating current</span></span></span></span><br /><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><br /></span></span></span></span> <span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e">V = I.R</span></span></span></span><br /><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e">so I = V/R   = 12/4200</span></span></span></span><br /><br /><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><b>I = 28 mA.</b></span></span></span></span><br /><br /><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e">Arduino can drain 20 mA current and need 28mA to switch relay. So we use npn </span></span></span></span><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e">P2N2222A transistor. </span></span></span></span><br /><h4><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><b><span class="_Tgc _y9e"> </span></b></span></span></span></h4><h4><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><b><span class="_Tgc _y9e">Reason of using transistor with relay </span></b></span></span></span></h4><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><b><span class="_Tgc _y9e"> </span></b></span> </span></span><br /><span class="_Tgc _y9e"><span class="_Tgc _y9e">             If you supply 5v directly to the coil of 12volt relay using IO pin of   arduino maybe the current is not enough to switch the latch since 5v /   400 ohm = 0.0125 A or ~13mA compare to typical 30mA of 12v relay. So you   have to use a transistor as a switch so that you can use 5v source of   arduino to switch on 12v source to power the relay. Any 12v source  would  be fine if it is able to provide current larger than 30mA.</span></span><br /><br />If  you  use 5v relay and use arduino IO pin to drive the relay directly,  the  coil resistor is around 70 ohm which needs ~71mA to work. This time  71mA  excess the absolute 40mA current limit of arduino IO pin. It will   likely damage your arduino. So again, you have to use transistor as a   switch to amplify the current apply to the relay coil.<br /><h4> </h4><h4>Reason of using diode with relay coil </h4>        <br />           The diode which is used is called flyback diode. The reason is if relay coil is charged it has magnetic field around it and if we turn OFF the relay a back emf comes which could harm our transistor.
